Empowered Fe Fes Rock Detroit Conference

The Fe Fes Pose as a Group with Micah Fialka-Feldman
This June, six members of the Empowered Fe Fes group of girls with disabilities traveled to Detroit for the Allied Media Conference, a conference for media makers for social justice. This was a trip of
many firsts. For most it was their first time on a trip without their parents, first time speaking in public
and networking with activists, first time managing a PA, and first time out in the “night life” to name a
few.
The Fe Fes accomplished quite a lot at the
conference. Their interactive game about discrimination in their lives called “Act Right” was a hit with the
20 youth organizations that they presented it to. The Fe Fes also presented their award-winning films to an
audience of about 50 media activists and answered questions about ableism, disability activism and their
process for making videos.
The Fe Fes didn’t just present, they also learned
about what other folks were doing for change in their communities. One highlight was the discussion session
for women of color with disabilities sponsored by INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence where the Fe Fes met with women that are pushing for
activists to see that disability oppression is tied up with race, class and gender oppression.
Since the trip the Fe Fes have come back with
renewed energy and ideas for their work. Watch out for their next big event in – Treat Her Like A Lady:
a Bake Sale and Conversation with Male Allies on August 9, 2008, from 1 to 5 pm at Access
Living.
